Roça Sundy Renovation

The Roça Sundy is an old farm, built in the second half of the 19th century, dedicated to cocoa production on Príncipe Island. It is a complex that includes several residential, production and support buildings with a total area of ​​approximately 45,000 m². The farm was granted a concession for tourism and has been adapted and refurbished in phases for this purpose. Gravidade was appointed to develop the the structural design projects to adaqpt and reinforce the buildings of the old cocoa dryers, converted into a support service centre for the various hotels operated by the concessionaire, the old villages, converted into an “art distric” with guest-houses, restaurant, galleries and local shops, as well as the extension of the main house, the hotel’s central accommodation unit. These are traditional buildings, with stone masonry walls and timber roofs. The interventions sought to preserve the existing buildings as much as possible and to use traditional materials and construction techniques.
